The Investment of a Lifetime: A Father’s Journey Raising a Champion
Raising an elite athlete isn’t just a commitment—it’s a calling. Sure, the financial cost can be high, but to me, it’s not just spending money. It’s an investment—an investment in my son’s future, his dreams, and the doors I know his hard work will open. Every dollar spent is part of a bigger vision, one that goes far beyond the finish line.
Time? It takes a lot of it. But I’ve never once considered it a burden. If my son has a meet or needs to travel, work can wait. I’ll take the days off. I’ll shift everything around. Nothing is more important than showing up and being present for the moments that matter most in his journey.
And as for marriage—honestly, we’ve found our rhythm. The only time things get a little tricky is around vacation season. I’ve had to remind my wife more than once: “No vacations during track season!” But she gets it now. In fact, she’s come full circle. At first, she thought the boys were training too much. Now she understands the grind, the discipline, the bigger picture. She sees the results and believes in the process just like I do.
This path doesn’t weigh on me. I know exactly what it takes to help my son excel, and I embrace it fully. There’s never been a moment of doubt or regret—just clarity and purpose.
People sometimes ask if I’ve ever dealt with others judging or questioning our path. Not really. But I’ve definitely had parents compare their kids to mine. What they don’t see is the work my son puts in—the early mornings, the late nights, the constant grind. He earns every bit of his success.
And then there are the endless calls and messages from people who want in, who want advice, who want help. I’ve had to learn to say “no” and protect our peace. At one point, I stopped answering the phone altogether because some people just wouldn’t take no for an answer.
Through it all, I remain focused, grounded, and proud. Because when you’re raising greatness, there’s no room for distractions—only purpose, passion, and persistence.
